Who Should I Listen To Today?
Instructions for daily Christian living in this world are found throughout the Holy Bible. One place we look this week is in the letter to the Hebrews found in the New Testament.
In order for us to live by the instructions of God, we need to understand where these instructions are coming from. We need to know who it is that has them.
Getting Started
King James Bible. Hebrews 1:1-2, "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son whom he appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds".
Modern English. Hebrews 1:1-2 God, who at various times and in many different manners spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by his Son (Jesus Christ) whom he appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds".
Diving In
This statement is written in the context of a larger body of writings but has enough context and weight to stand on its own; so let's take a closer look.
It's clear by this passage, as believers we understand that before Christ came to the earth, God spoke to his people through the prophets of old. (We can learn about some of those prophets in the Old Testament books of the Holy Bible)
However, the author here is saying that there is a new way ordained by God to speak to his people, that way being Jesus Christ. God is in Christ speaking to his people; to those who believe.
King James Bible Hebrews 1:3, "Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high".
Modern English. Hebrews 1:3, Jesus, who is God's radiance or brightness, and an exact representation of God, and who holds up everything by the word of God's power, once he (Jesus) had by this power in himself delivered a means of purification from our sins, he then sat down at the right hand of God".
This is a clear picture that all authority in heaven and in earth resides in the hands of Jesus Christ. This would mean he alone has the way to purge us from our old sins and guarantee us eternal life with God the Father and himself.
To live a godly life today, we must make up our minds that we intend to learn from and listen to Jesus Christ. We must understand that to take his commands lightly is to take God lightly. Refusing to do things as Jesus has taught us, is refusing to do God's will.
May God richly bless you and keep you as you Focus on Jesus today.
